The ASTD (American Society for Training and Development) is the largest US Human Resource Organization and organizes yearly a comprehensive management conference with 10 000 participants from all over the world. This year, I am invited to make a session (S312) on the subject “Time – An Experimental Journey.”

If you are prepared to pay the price for an executive program in the US, then choose the Harvard Business School. Motto: Extremely expensive, but effective. With a yearly budget greater than the entire science budget of Austria, Harvard can afford the best professors in every faculty. For those who don’t want to pay the price you can buy a sweatshirt bearing the logo “Harvard University” which, unfortunately, doesn’t have quite the same effect as an M.B.A.

Ken Blanchard is the best trainer I have ever met. No one understands as well as he does how to put complex problems into clear pictures without diluting the substance of his excellent concepts. I am not the “fan club” type, but after a lecture I always join my colleagues, out of deep conviction, in giving him standing ovations.

With “In Search of Excellence” he wrote the best-selling business book of all times and was the first trainer-guru who asked for a fee of USD 100 000 - and got it. Even though I can’t stand “power trainers”, he is still the original and when you see what he is about, you feel that he has written more books than most of his colleagues have read. On his homepage you can download his current presentation.

With the “Seven Ways to Effectiveness” Franklin Covey has written a bestseller whose success is, for me, not completely understandable. His training company is a highly efficient marketing factory which impresses mainly by the comprehensiveness of its supply.

Bob Pike offers mainly excellent “train the trainers” workshops that I can recommend from personal experience. Above all, one can learn a lot about methodology from him.

Rick Jarov, one of the most fascinating trainers that I know, offers his very successful “anti-career” workshops for people dropping out and people who are newcomers. He has lived for a long time in India, speaks 4 languages and his concepts have much substance.
